Recommended Wine Pairings for Easter Dinner

Easter is a time to gather around the table with friends and family and share a special dinner. Since traditional Easter dishes center around roasted ham or leg of lamb, you may be wondering what wines pair best with these main courses. The team at Theorem Vineyards recommended the best wine pairings for your Easter dinner, so your friends and family can enjoy a great meal with delicious wine on this upcoming holiday!

Wine Pairings for Ham Dishes

Traditional Easter hams are usually prepared with sweet glazed toppings that balance well with its saltiness. The wine should balance all the dishes and flavors on your plate. Riesling or Gewürztraminer are both excellent wines for ham. Both of these wines have fresh and flavorful profiles with enough sweet fruit to balance the salt in the ham. The best thing about these two wines is that they are both crowd-pleasing whites that handle a wide variety of palates. Both of these wines accommodate different types of ham preparations and side dishes.

For a Riesling pairing, we recommend 2016 Chateau Montelena Riesling, Potter Valley. The vividness of this wine complements any ham dish. It also has a subtle initial sweetness highlighted by fresh fig and honey that is quickly replaced by candied orange peel with a delicate finish. For a Gewürztraminer, we recommend the 2017 Corison Corazon Gewürztraminer, Anderson Valley. This wine has aromas of jasmine, lemongrass, and white peach. This wine is fermented to dryness and has snappy, mouthwatering natural acidity.

If you prefer pairing your Easter dinner with red wine, we recommend pairing ham meals with Zinfandel. A Zinfandel with higher alcohol content and a fruit-forward approach will balance wonderfully with glazed ham. We recommend 2016 Kinsella Spencer Vineyard Zinfandel. This wine has a complex blend of tart blueberries, baked plums, warm earth, fresh black cherries, anise, pie crust and a slight note of sweet confectionary candy. The complex flavors mirror the nose, with a savory and spicy finish and a grip in tannins.

Wine Pairings for Lamb Dishes

For a truly decadent experience, there’s no better option than pairing lamb dishes with a delicious Cabernet. Roast lamb is a wonderful Easter dinner tradition that will complement the bold flavors of red wine and be sure to delight your guests. Whether you are planning on having a rack of lamb or a leg of lamb, Cabernet Sauvignon is the best option. Lamb is unlike any other meat because it has unique juicy flavors and soft texture. The goal is to pair lamb dishes with red wines that have a good tannin structure and fruitful flavors. The red wine you choose should have enough fruit and acidity to handle the robust flavor of the lamb without overpowering it.

We recommend our 2013 Voir Dire Cabernet Sauvignon. The steep hillside and shallow soils of our vineyard give our wine tremendous length and class while maintaining a fruity profile. The tannins have phenolic ripeness of both fruit and tannins. Our 2013 Voir Dire is an elegant wine that pairs perfectly with any lamb dish.

Wine Pairings for Chicken Dishes

Many families also like to serve chicken dishes for Easter dinner, such as a luxurious creamy parmesan chicken dish. If you are planning on serving chicken for your Easter dinner, we recommend pairing it with a Chardonnay. White meats pair best with white wine because the mild and refreshing flavors of the wine highlight the flavors of the chicken. We recommend the 2016 Rivers-Marie Joy Road Chardonnay. This wine holds plenty in reserve with a bright, green-fruited mid palate and firm acidity from start to finish.

Wine Pairings for Vegetarian Dishes

Veggie lovers don’t need to miss out of a delicious Easter meal! Many vegetarian and vegan dishes pair beautifully with a glass of Cabernet. Meat-less dishes can stand up to full-bodied red wine, like a ratatouille tart or fusilli with artichoke hearts and parmesan cream. We recommend pairing your Easter vegetarian menu with our 2016 Hawk’s Prey Cabernet Sauvignon. Hawk’s Prey has elegant, complex aromas of ripe plums, milk chocolate, wild blackberries, cassis, violets, warm freshly tilled earth, and baking spice. This wine is unique because it has refined red fruit notes filled with freshness and energy. On the palate, the wine is soft and lush with a dense core of flavors. The tannins are smooth and silky while adding structure to the wine.
