Best Tips for Drinking Red Wines in the Summer Outdoors

Although the temperatures are rising, and days are becoming hotter, it doesn’t mean you have to stop drinking red wines. You may have stored your red wine bottles to drink them in the cooler months; however, there are tips and tricks you can use to enjoy a delicious glass of red wine outdoors on a hot summer day. Theorem Vineyard has put together suggestions on how to enjoy red wines during the warm season.

Can We Drink Red Wine During the Summer?

We’ve always been told that red wines are best at room temperature, but would that apply to warm summer days? This old advice originates from cooler rooms in medieval France. Their rooms were typically around 57° to 60° F degrees, which is why everyone drank red wines at room temperature—serving red wines too warm results in sweeter and more alcoholic flavors. Ideally, you would want to serve a lighter red between 59° to 64° F degrees.

How to Choose & Serve Red Wine in the Summer

One of the most important tricks to drinking red wine on warm summer days is refreshment. This is important because many red wines can taste overpowering or rich and heavy if they aren’t chilled.

We have gathered helpful tips to enjoy red wine all year long:

  • Choose an unoaked or lightly oaked wine: Drinking an unoaked or lightly oaked red wine will result in a lighter, fruitier, and refreshing profile—perfect for hot summer days.
  • Choose a wine with lower ABV: Wines with higher alcohol can affect you more in hot weather. We recommend choosing wines of 13% alcohol content or below.
  • Light to medium body: Lighter bodied red wines are easier on the palate and are more refreshing than full-bodied red wines. Full-bodied wines character profiles also change if chilled.
  • Low to medium tannins: Red wines with low to medium tannins are also lighter on the palate.

How Long Should You Chill Red Wine?

We recommend putting a light-bodied red wine into the fridge for half an hour. This will tone down the sensation of soupy warmth in a relatively high-alcohol red. Ideally, chilled red wines are served at a temperature of 59° to 64° F. However, anything lower than 57° will mute the aromas and flavors, the tannins will turn sharp, and unpleasantly tight. Slightly chilling red wine allows the flavors to become the focus instead of the alcohol. It also tightens up the structure of the wine and makes it more refreshing.

Great Red Wines for Summertime

Light-bodied red wines are the ideal red wines for the summer because they can be slightly chilled. However, even though full-bodied red wines are still recommended to keep at room temperature, they are still drinkable during the summer. If you want to enjoy a delicious glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, you can do so over a cool summer evening, or you can enjoy your time in a cool indoors. We have gathered a list of the best red wines to drink during the summer.
