Voir Dire is the flagship wine of Theorem Vineyard that is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Voir Dire: The Perfect Cabernet Sauvignon
Theorem Vineyard’s flagship wine, Voir Dire, was produced from the oldest vines on our Diamond Mountain estate. The name is a legal term that means “to speak the truth,” which is a tribute to Jason Itkin’s work as an attorney, as well as a reminder that the truth is often spoken after a glass of wine (or two).
When we purchased the Theorem Vineyard’s property in 2012, the vineyard had been largely abandoned. During the growing season, our winemaker, Thomas Brown, and our vineyard manager, Josh Clark, found that deer had eaten most of the canopy of our Voir Dire block. We considered removing the vines and replacing them, but Thomas Brown noticed that the vines still had great potential and suggested using the few grapes left over to produce wine. Luckily, we did pick the grapes, and we created our very first wine—a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that is sophisticated, captivating, and timeless. Built to age, this wine is a stunning reflection of the unique soil and microclimate from which it grew. It is a full-bodied wine balanced with strong, extracted black flavors.
2012 Vintage
The aromatics of the 2012 Voir Dire include ripe red and black fruit. On the palate, ripe plums are revealed first, followed by exuberant notes of macerated strawberries, cherry cola, baked blackberries, warm earth, and fresh rose petals. The charm of the 2012 vintage is its forward nature and voluptuous form. The flavors are layered, plush, and cascade off the tongue to an opulent finish of ripe berries, fresh currants, and sweet herbs. This wine is a spectacular vintage—and, with one sip, you will quickly see why we hold this vintage so close to our hearts. Our winemaker Thomas Brown called the 2012 Voir Dire his “biggest revelation of the 2012 vintage.” Unfortunately, we were only able to produce 55 cases of the 2012 Voir Dire, and very little of it remains.
2013 Vintage
Napa Valley was blessed with great weather in 2013—imparting a string of excellent vintages. One publication noted that “For many winemakers and vintners, California’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon vintage is quite simply the finest of their careers.” Napa Valley received the gift of a warm summer with no heat spikes and no rain. This created grapes with smaller clusters and thicker skins. All of these factors combined to create cabernets of depth with the structure to develop for decades. One of the most exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon created in 2013 was our Voir Dire. It has experienced a remarkable evolution, even within the past few months.
The hallmarks of the 2013 vintage are freshness and power, and the 2013 Voir Dire has that in spades. Lifted aromas of fresh blackberries, violets, and wild raspberries layer on top of notes of ripe tobacco leaf, cedar, and graphite. As the wine opens, it reveals deep aromas of strawberry compote, rhubarb, and milk chocolate. These aromas are fresh on the nose, expansive, and concentrated on the palate with a firm grip of tannins that ensure this wine will age gracefully for years to come.
